Smoking Behaviour and Quality of Life Among Adults in Puncak Alam: A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract
Introduction: Smoking affects health-related quality of life based on people's self-report evaluation of their physical ability, mental function, and overall condition. This study was conducted to determine smoking behaviours and the quality of life among adults in Puncak Alam. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among adults in Puncak Alam. The questionnaire has three parts: sociodemographic, smoking behaviour and quality of life. Results: A total of 296 respondents participated in this study. Smoking behaviour results showed most of the respondents were current smokers (51.0%), light smokers (66.6%) and no nicotine dependence (47.6%). The majority of respondents reported good quality of life in mobility (85.5%), self-care (93.6%), usual activities (80.4%), pain or discomfort (65.9%), and anxiety or depression (80.7%). There was a significant relationship between smoking behaviour (smoking status, smoking intensity, level of nicotine dependence) and quality of life where p=<0.05. Conclusion: There was an association between sociodemographic characteristics (age, gender, marital status, monthly household income, education level, BMI, chronic disease) with smoking status, smoking intensity and nicotine dependence, p=<0.05. Future research should consider the period of quitting smoking among past smokers to identify accurate findings.
