Abstract

The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in human health, influencing various physiological processes. Exposure to environmental chemicals, particularly pesticides, has been shown to disrupt the balance of gut microbiota, leading to gut dysbiosis. This imbalance is associated with adverse health outcomes, including metabolic disturbances and chronic inflammation. However, scientific evidence on impacts of pesticides on gut microbiota and function remains limited. This review synthesizes recent findings on pesticide-induced gut dysbiosis, highlighting its significant health implications. Studies included in this narrative review were selected through a comprehensive search across multiple databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect) covering from 2016 to 2025 using relevant keywords. Findings revealed that pesticides disrupt gut microbiota, affecting metabolism, gut barrier integrity, oxidative stress, and inflammatory responses in a dose- and duration-dependent manner. The review underscores the need for further research and cautious pesticide use to protect gut health.
