The Perceptions of Nursing Students on Learning Practical Skills During Undergraduate Study
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Practical skills training is a crucial component of nursing education, linking theoretical knowledge with real-world clinical applications. With an emphasis on readiness, competency, and the efficacy of educational programmes, this study explores nursing students' opinions on acquiring practical skills during their undergraduate studies. Methods: Twelve final-year nursing students at the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, participated in semi-structured interviews as part of a qualitative study using a purposive sampling method. Key themes and sub-themes were identified through thematic analysis. Findings: The four themes that emerged were practical skills, preparedness, self-assessed competence, and educational programme. Students emphasised the value of practical experience, theoretical integration, and feedback in learning new skills. Recommendations include increasing simulation opportunities and improving the curriculum structure. Conclusion: A strong nursing education programme that prioritizes hands-on training, self-assessment, and feedback systems is essential for preparing students for clinical practice.
