Development and Evaluation of Animated Videos Promoting Healthy Diet During Pregnancy and Exclusive Breastfeeding for Healthy Child Growth

Abstract
Introduction: Healthy and adequate maternal nutrition during pregnancy and exclusive breastfeeding are helpful for preventing child stunting, yet educational tools to promote this, particularly on digital platforms, are still lacking. Thus, this study aimed to develop and evaluate a series of animated videos for nutrition educational purpose. Methods: A design and developmental research method consisting of content analysis, video design and development, and video evaluation phases was utilised in this study. The video storyboards and scripts were created based on a review of literature and guidelines and evaluated by six field experts. The videos were created using Powtoon software and evaluated by multimedia experts to ensure technical quality. Fifty reproductive-aged women assessed the understandability, actionability, and suitability of the videos using the PEMAT-AV and SAM tools. Results: Four short, animated videos were developed regarding the recommended intakes of total calories, macronutrients, and micronutrients for pregnant and exclusively breastfeeding mothers. The storyboards and scripts were approved by content experts in terms of objectives, structure, presentation, and relevance. The videos also received favourable responses from the target viewers, with scores ranging from 96% to 100% for understandability, 95% to 99% for actionability, and 94% to 99% for suitability. Conclusion: The newly developed animated video series on healthy maternal nutrition during pregnancy and exclusive breastfeeding was approved by content and multimedia experts. They were also found to have desirable levels of suitability, understandability, and actionability. These indicate its acceptability as a nutrition education tool for promoting healthy child growth through maternal nutrition.
