Abstract

Noise poses a serious threat to the health of industrial workers, yet awareness and preventive actions still need improvement. The manufacturing industry often exposes workers to high noise levels that can have an impact on their hearing health. This study describes the overall practices of noise management in the Malaysian manufacturing industry. It also explores factors related to awareness in managing noise, as well as the challenges and strategies in complying with local noise regulations. Materials and methods: This research used a qualitative approach by using in-depth, semi-structured interviews with eight experts selected purposively based on their relevant skills, experience, and knowledge in noise management in the Malaysian manufacturing industry. Interviews were conducted in person and over the phone, and they were audio-recorded. Results: The findings indicate that noise management in Malaysia's manufacturing sector has not yet reached optimal levels, emphasising awareness gaps and compliance challenges with local regulations. The findings highlight the necessity for organisational support, employee engagement and robust regulatory enforcement, along with targeted education and promotion. The study underscores the importance of collaboration between employers and employees to improve workplace safety and health, with governmental support being integral to these efforts. Conclusion: This study has important implications for raising awareness to educate both employees and employers, as well as expanding enforcement and support from the authorities. Recommendations from this study emphasise the necessity of improving noise management practices in the Malaysian manufacturing industry, ensuring a work environment conducive to hearing health and good noise management.
