Abstract

Introduction: Inabah is a form of Islam-based psycho-spiritual therapy for drug addiction which has long been available as a face-to-face treatment in Inabah centres. As females are not admissible and many constraints could hinder in physical attendance, the demand for non- face-to-face treatment becomes increasingly crucial. This study intends to compare the perceptions towards conventional Inabah and its newly-designed non-physical version i.e., Virtual-Inabah (V-Inabah) among persons with substance use disorders (SUDs), based on their socio-demographic profiles. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among residents of Inabah Rehabilitation Centre in Kelantan, Terengganu and Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The Perceptions on V-Inabah versus Conventional Inabah Questionnaire was utilised (higher score = more favourable perceptions). Descriptive statistics and independent t-test were utilised (SPSS version 25.0). Results: A total of 136 male participants were conveniently recruited (age = 31.7±9.5; Malay = 98.5%; single = 74.3%; previous addiction treatment = 21.3%). Overall, positive perceptions towards both Inabah treatment versions were reported, ranging from 62.5% to 79.4%, with higher scores were given to V-Inabah in content intensity, comprehensiveness, arrangement, accessibility, delivery method, privacy and overall satisfaction (>60%). Additionally, 81.6% of them would recommend V-Inabah to others. No significant differences between perception of V-Inabah with the selected demographic variables were detected (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Findings demonstrated that there was generally positive perception towards V-Inabah among drug abusers thus, supporting it to be included in the continuum care of drug addiction. Further exploration with follow-up is clearly warranted to confirm its effectiveness for rehabilitating drug addicts.
